How to Organize Your Home Office For Success

You can get your home office more organized where it’s more accessible and clean.
Is your computer room or your “office” in complete disarray? Do you have cords in a mass entanglement behind your desk and way too many plugs coming out of the outlet in your wall? If you’re afraid that something might blow, maybe it is time to get it together in there! If your desk is accumulating layer of sediment (more specifically, piles and piles of papers), let me help you out.
I admit, I’m notorious for letting papers pile up if I don’t file things immediately. I just keep thinking to myself that I’ll eventually get around to it. Don’t try and take on a whole reorganization of your home office all at one time. Trust me, you’ll get more discouraged and then put it off all together.
Start out by going to the store -It sounds weird to think that you need to acquire more to make it look like less, but when it comes to organization, you sort of do. Invest in some folders, a filing cabinet if you don’t already have one and draw organizers. A paper shredder is also a must if you really have a home office.
Start small -Once you get back from the shopping spree, start with the dispensable items and get rid of them. Take a huge garbage bag with you and start hurling papers! If you’re a paper hoarder bust out that filing cabinet and file it all away in a manner that makes sense. Throw out the stuff that doesn’t work, old pens, empty tape dispensers, etc. Use your drawer trays to organize stacks of office supplies.
Revisit your filling cabinet -If you already have a filing cabinet, you might need to go through it to make room for the new stuff. Shred old documents, or if it is necessary to keep them, put them in a box and stick it in storage.
Get Control of Your Cables -Remember that mess of a cord pile behind your desk with too many plugs in the outlet? Get a cord protector which will separate all the cords and protect them as well. There are also different cable wraps, ties, clips and clamps you can get as well. For the outlet, get a power strip, and even a surge protector so you can rest easy that you’re not going to blow out all the electrical wiring in your home.
Make it a habit Make it a goal to clear off your desk at least once a week. Only put things on your desk that are absolutely necessary. If you slowly get yourself into this habit, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to clean and organize your home office when you keep at it.

There are a couple of things that I want to point out before I really get into the important parts of this article.
First and foremost, don’t let the title fool you as anyone can benefit from the contents contained here. If you want to experience success in any area of your life, if you are Network Marketer wanting more success, or any of a thousand situations that you may find yourself.
Secondly, if you have been reading any of my other articles you will recognize this as a continuation of my attempt to pass along the knowledge gained from reading “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.
When I first read this book, I noticed that Stephen Covey asks early on that as the reader we shift our paradigm from that of learning to that of teaching.
With that concept in mind, he asks that we try to pass on our newly acquired knowledge in an attempt to gain more from the material. For some reason this time through it hit me that I should write about that newly acquired knowledge thereby sharing with an unlimited number of people.
Early on in the in the Overview of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen Covey defines habits as the intersection of Knowledge, Skill and Desire.
Personally, I am very much impressed with this definition of habits, especially as it applies to those entrepreneurs that have engaged in the profession of Network Marketing. All too often those new to the Network Marketing or MLM profession are full of Desire, but have little Knowledge and/or Skill required to experience true success.
This is where Stephen’s discussion of P/PC and the balance that is required for true success. In this example “P” is the “Production” and “PC” is the “Production Capability”.
According to the theory we must continually invest in “PC” if we expect to benefit from “P”. As you may have guessed our most important asset is our ability to earn. Without continual investment in our ability to earn (PC) we are locked into our current financial situation, have limited options and really have little hope of things changing.
As an entrepreneur in the MLM profession you are without a doubt your most important asset. Continued improvement in your Leadership, Marketing, Speaking, and Sales (Recruiting) skills you will find yourself limiting your earning potential. However, you are also doing a tremendous disservice to those that you work with, because when you begin to limit yourself, you begin to limit your ability to pass on the much needed Skills and Knowledge.
Change and sacrifice are often difficult challenges. However, if you begin to look around at the most successful people that you know they embrace change and often sacrifice today for want they want later.
Regardless of a person’s profession (sports professional, business professional, network marketer, small business owner) those that are creating lasting success understand these principles.
Keep the Desire burning, but map out a plan to improve on the Skills and Knowledge required to achieve your goals, dreams and success that you so desire. As your skills and knowledge improve take time to mentor those that you come in contact with.
If you eternalize all that you gain it is of limited value. However, if you share with those around you everyone wins. Those that you are mentoring win because they are gaining new skills and in many cases because this is the direct result of mentoring, that learning curve is not as challenging.
You win because in the process of mentoring others you gain more insight and in many cases as a direct result of questions that you field, your skills are improved.
While I truly wish that I could share all that I have gain from the reading of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
This book is truly a must read if you want to experience success in all that you do. The insights gained are applicable to not only your professional, but your personal life.
Regardless of your profession and especially for those of you who share my passion for the Network Marketing profession, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book and read it until it begins to fall apart. At that point you will have a solid foundation in the habits required to experience success throughout life.

Network Marketers often ask “What’s Deductible – and what’s not—in a Multi-Level marketing business?”
Having a Multi Level Marketing business is what I call the “#1 tax shelter for the little guy”. Whether you work the business part-time, or are a full-time networker, once you start your own business, you can take advantage of many deductions available only to business owners. You can deduct a portion of your cell phone, vehicle, household and other expenses that you would not otherwise be able to write-off your tax bill if you were not in network marketing.
The federal and state tax codes are full of deductions for businesses, and you are entitled to take them whether you work your business from home or from a fancy outside office. In effect, you are sharing expenses with Uncle Sam—and your state governor as well.
Before we begin, it pays for you to know, in general, how businesses are taxed. ‘Big picture’-wise, the government taxes a business’s profit or ‘net income’—so the less you end up with after expenses, the less taxes you pay. What that means to you is this: you’re not taxed on gross receipts or your ‘top-line’ income. Your tax liability is based on your bottom line, or what’s left after deducting expenses. So the more you can deduct from you top line income, the better!
The tricky part is this: some expenses are deductible this year, but other expenses must be spread out over several years. For example, you might be able to write off 100% of the cost of new computers and furniture this year (per IRS Code Section 179). But if you don’t have a lot of income, a wise strategy might be to defer some of that deductible expense to future years (‘depreciation’ expense). Start up costs can also be tricky: you can a portion this year if it’s the first year of your MLM business, but you’ll have to spread the rest (“amortize”) over the next several years.
That being said, here is a partial list of deductible expenses. Many of these are overlooked by Network Marketing business owners:

Computer Expense Dues and Subscriptions
Education and Training Equipment and Furniture
Gifts Home Office Expense I
Insurance Inventory
Licenses and Permits Meals and Entertainment
Postage and Delivery Printing

Retirement Savings Start Up Costs
Supplies and Materials Taxes
Telephone Travel
Uniform Expense
IRS Publication 463 “Travel, Entertainment, Gift and Car Expenses” is a must-read if you are doing your own tax preparation. It definitely pays to know the (IRS) code rather than assuming something is deductible when it comes to these areas.
Consider hiring a tax professional to prepare your tax return. You’ll usually save far more in taxes than you’ll spend in his or her fees. Tax accountants know the rules, prepare hundreds of returns each year, can lower your tax bill, and help you avoid mistakes that might otherwise lead to an IRS audit.
